Money is often a tricky subject, especially for women.
Whether it’s overcoming limiting beliefs, breaking free from financial stress, or learning how to manage and grow wealth, financial empowerment is essential for building the life you truly want.
Recently, I had an incredible conversation with TV producer, content coach, and spiritual entrepreneur Shamara “Star” Cox. We discussed the unique challenges and opportunities women face regarding money. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a paycheck-to-paycheck cycle, struggled with managing business finances, or wondered how to build lasting wealth, this conversation is for you.
Let’s dive into some of the biggest takeaways from our conversation and how you can start taking control of your finances today!
Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs About Money
One of the biggest challenges women face when it comes to money? Mindset.
Too often, we grow up hearing things like:
🚫 “Money isn’t important.”
🚫 “If you just work hard, everything will work out.”
🚫 “Wanting more money is greedy.”
These beliefs can hold us back from truly embracing financial freedom and wealth-building opportunities. As I shared in my conversation with Star, I used to believe that because I was a social worker, I’d never make good money—and I didn’t think I needed to. But that belief kept me playing small, and it wasn’t until I changed my mindset that I was able to take control of my finances and build true financial security.
💡 Action Step: Challenge any negative beliefs you have about money. Instead of saying, “I’ll never be good with money,” reframe it as “I am learning to manage my money with confidence and intention.”
How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck
Many of us have been there—stressed every month about whether we’ll have enough to cover our bills, constantly playing catch-up, and feeling stuck in a cycle that never seems to end. But here’s the truth: getting out of the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle starts with a plan.
Here’s what I teach my clients:
✨ Know Your Numbers: Get clear on what’s coming in, what’s going out, and where your money is really going.
✨ Create a Spending Plan: Budgets often feel restrictive, but I encourage you to think of it as a spending plan—a way to intentionally allocate your money toward what matters most.
✨ Prioritize Savings: Even if it’s just a small amount at first, start building an emergency fund so you’re not relying on credit cards for unexpected expenses.
Too often, we think budgeting means deprivation, but it’s really about freedom—giving every dollar a purpose so you can actually enjoy life without financial stress.
The Power of Aligning Your Money with Your Values
One of my favorite parts of our conversation was when we talked about spending intentionally. So often, we make purchases out of habit or social pressure rather than aligning our spending with what we truly value.
For example:
💸 Do you say “yes” to expensive outings with friends even when it doesn’t align with your financial goals?
💸 Do you find yourself mindlessly spending on things that don’t actually bring you joy?
💸 Are you prioritizing your future self—or just reacting to what’s happening in the moment?
Instead of saying, “I can’t afford that,” try shifting to, “That’s not part of my financial plan right now.” This small mindset shift helps you take ownership of your financial decisions rather than feeling deprived.
💡 Action Step: Review your recent spending. Does it reflect what you truly value? If not, start making small adjustments to align your money with your goals.
Managing Money as a Business Owner
If you’re an entrepreneur, managing personal finances is just one part of the equation—your business finances matter, too!
Many business owners fall into the trap of treating their business income like an ATM, pulling money as needed without a clear system. This can lead to financial instability, tax surprises, and difficulty scaling.
Here’s how to get your business finances in order:
✅ Separate Business and Personal Finances: Create a dedicated business account to clearly track income and expenses.
✅ Pay Yourself a Salary: Don’t just take whatever you need—set up a structured payment system to ensure your business remains profitable.
✅ Plan for Taxes: Set aside a portion of your income for taxes so you’re not caught off guard when tax season rolls around.
If you don’t have a plan for your business finances, it can be just as chaotic as personal finances!
